FRANCE 1 YEAR SINCE I LEFT CAPE TOWN ON MY SECOND ATTEMT TO CAIRO. DAY 306 & 307

NEW REAR TYRE .

Rode to Menton to get a new rear tyre and it rained most the way and got drenched. Found Ruchelieu Hotel which was nearby luckily €51.

    15K km.   104 958km on bike.

DAY 306   ONE YEAR SINCE I LEFT CAPE TOWN.     20 OCTOBER 2023

Caught the train to Monaco and walked the circuit and around the harbour. Was going to stay another night but the hotel is fully booked so will head towards Switzerland to meet up with an old friend. Wether looks good and will most likely stay where I did last Saturdaynight in Calico.

The big yacht belongs to the ex Prime Minister of Lebanon and cost $100 million and $10 million a year to maintain.

worlds smallest sink., with a shelf above so you can't lean over it, utterly stupid.

FRANCE BARCELONETTE - MONACO DAY DAY 305

ROUTE DE GRANDE ALPES

Hotel room was very comfortable and the breakfast was excellent ,typical French ,bread, meats and cheese, coffee ,yogurt.

Well the weather has turned and the mountains were in the clouds all day with intermittent very light drizzle. Had to stop to put my one piece rain suite on but could only put in one arm as I was unable to get the other arm in without assistance. Luckily a few kilometers down the road was a construction crew, so I stopped and took two of them to get it over my shoulder and zipped up.

Went over a number of 7 to 8 thousand foot passes and a lot of them have had the Tour de France race pass through. I passed cyclists on almost all these passes, with 12 to 15 % grade, respect.

It was one helluva ride and nobody on the roads, got damn cold at times and the roads were were the entire way, but was lucky there was no rain. I did the route plan myself and seems like it was the same as the Route of Grande Alpes from north to south and ends in Menton.

Arrived in Monaco and could hardly recognize the place. The purpose of coming down here was to talk to the head Marshall of the Grand Prix. Found the office and he came out to speak to me as I want to Marshall at next year's GrandPrix, but he said I was to old and I assured him I was not old, showed him my picture of when I marshaled there in 77 and 80 , but no go.
That's such bullshit, I know the French don't age well with all their smoking and eating bread and being rude to anyone who speaks English, and they lost the quarter finals of the WC Rugby to the Springboks, but that's no reason to not make an exception for me.
Their loss.

Went to Nice along the ocean road and found a hotel a block from the promenade where I went and had a sandwich and a beer and enjoyed the view of the ocean and hustle and bustle of the people enjoying the night.

FRANCE PUNCTURE #6 DAY 304 208km.

SAINT JEANNE DE MARIENNE TO BARCELONETTE.   208km.

Left the horrible ski apartment the size of a shoe box, with no towels, TP, hand soap or pillow cases. Only got there at 11pm. Bookings ,com had me a confirmed room and when I called I was told the place is full, so had to start all over again via SouthAfrica, cause my internet ŵill not work.

Did some passes again up to 8000ft, my hands were frozen. Completed several other passes and then at noon had a puncture, #6.
UnfortunatelyI pinched the tube ,so rode 7km down the a motorbike shop and the guy fixed it all, another new tube and replaced the spoke rubber seal and inspected the rim, which is fine. Started to drizzle ,so got a nice hotel room, €92.

Went out for a beer and cheese platter.

    BARCELONETTE.

ITALY - FRANCE DAY 304 573km.

ROUTE  CALICO DOWN LAKE COMO ABOVE MILAN AND TURIN INTO FRANCE.

Autostrada all the way to France. Then the passes began and never stopped. Weather is perfect, blue skies and started off cold but then warm all day. Only got into my room at 11pm because Booking.com screwd me around, the booked room was taken so had to scramble and drive thirty minutes for the one I got which was a joke, no towel, no TP, no hand soap, no pillow cases.

LAST RACE DAY 8th JUNE 2024

The race was postponed three times and finally got going at 1pm, only two laps, but the track is 37.7 miles long.
