KIGALI TO VOLCANOES N.P. 124km
After two nights in Kigali trying to get a permit for Bwindi to see the Gorrilas, I come to find out Rwanda has a special on to see the Gorillas for Africans. The normal
fee is $1500 but we only pay $500 !
So drove back up north. got a covid test and am all set for the big day. Got to Peak Spot campsite which is near the park entrance on the mountainside with great views of the volcanic mountains. It was a cold miserable night but when I got up at 5am the skies were clear and hopefully won't have to hike in the rain.
After renting a rain jacket and some gators we marched for about an hour till we came to a family laying around in th
e jungle, just resting where we were able to get real close and some good photos and videos. The giant Siverback decided to leave so they all follow him, so we tracked them a short way through the bamboo forest to their next feeding ground. They had to come by us as we got in front of them and they just walked on by, one had a baby on her back but was tough to photograph. We spent the remainder of the hour there and you don't get a minute longer.
This is where Dr. Dian Fossey did her research from 1962 to 1985 where she was murdered on the 26th December 1985. She was buried besides a few other Gorillas and nobody has ever been brought to justice.
