PROGRESS UPDATE. 21st June 2022

As far as tasks getting done for the trip, it was a good week and accomplished a lot.

I went to Paarl and met with Paul on the routes he has done to Cairo, which was helpful and more importantly places not to miss especially in Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. Probably more importantly is places where not to go, they'll have roadsigns I am sure !
Got some spotlights to blind oncoming traffic that can't see me, connected to my ignition,  so when I forget my key on it won't kill the battery.
Finally settled on some Sidi boots, so different over here trying to buy stuff, you don't  have the selections you get in the US which we have been spoiled with.

Fi ding a helmet has been a challenge for me, the Arai I wanted they don't  get here so ended up with a BMW helmet, high was 50% off,  so only paid R6500 ! So that was a lucky break so ended up buying some gloves and now am a walking BMW commercial, it's embarrassing.

Whilst we were out in Stellenbosch I had my seat recovered by Andrew who did a bang up job, so that completes the bike prep, not exactly, still need to sort out my tool tube and then its DONE.

After an exhausting day of shopping, we popped in at Rust en Vrede winery for a bite to eat and sat outside overlooking the estate, soaking up the sun on a most unexpected spectacular day. The food was not to bad either.

Almost forgot, when I bought the spots we ended up buying a second hand Suzuki Swift on Tuesday, so Charmain can get around and I don't  have to go shopping ever again for food. Woolworths chicken mayonnaise with avo will surely be missed, but we'll see how good Charmain is at making them at home.

Today was a real productive day. Knowing I was going to leave in July, I have steadily been working out, getting buffed, and bulked up to the extent I had to have my riding pants and well all my pants adjusted at the tailor today. He got them done in no time and only cost R250 and you can't even see where he made them bigger. Then went to Fish Hoek to register the car and it took four minutes and R550 and I was out of there, unbelievable.
Then stopped to get my new number plates and the guy had them made and fitted on the car in eighteen minutes and R320 later I was racing home with a strong south easily wind howling head on, but Suzuki sewing machine engine powered through it effortlessly.

The weather has been rainy and a little cold at night but had a few nice days and was able to swim a couple of times at Fisherman's and Windmill beach, where the woman are not shy about going topless. Of course they don't  like me taking pictures of them, unlike the Himbas.

PREPARING MY BMW F800 FOR THE TRIP NORTH

 Sunday 12th June 2022

So here I am sitting in my lounge overlooking False Bay with a huge storm brewing and a strong north wind howling so the rains are coming. This morning there were two whales in the original naval harbour for hours which was fun to watch through my binoculars and then they were gone. I think they were Wright whales but I maybe wrong.

Now it's  time for me to get going. Have been procrastinating about starting my blog but am now on it and I believe it will also help me to get going on my bike aswell.

I have been planning to go up the west side of Africa, but just recently have changed my mind and am thinking of going up the east side to Cairo and then on to Israel to Turkei or maybe down to Saudi Arabia. Egypt is the main problem to enter, cause you have to pay 200% of the value of your vehicle and when you depart with your vehicle you essentially get it back, but I believe it is a huge hassle. Am planning on meeting with two guys who have done it this week and that will be real  helpful in making my final decision on which route to take.

This  last week was real productive as I found a mechanic that could and did work on my bike and I didn't  have to take it to BMW Cape Town. Douglas lives nearby in Fish Hoek and works out of his garage and is a certified BMW mechanic and I was real impressed  with his operation and the feed back.

He replaced my wheel bearings and fitted a new shock bolt, which actually was bent and set my shock for my weight, which has sadly increased over the last year. The major mod was getting  the fuel filter out of the housing where it is real difficult  to change, and placing it under my seat where it is easy peasy to change and put in a new fuel pump. He also checked that my stator was good and clutch cable not shredded and then cleaned my sprocket and chain. The old fuel filter was so blocked that when you blew into it, well you couldn't blow anything through it, so the fuel pump was really working hard.

NEXT WEEK'S GOALS

 Buy a Suzuki Swift.

Buy helmet, boots, spotlights and rebuild my seat.

Get Troopy suspension dialled in, another trip to Brackenfell !

Meet with Uwe and Paul on route planning.

Thursday is a national holiday, Youthday, so am going in the Troopy to ride in the dunes and hopefully get stuck.
